SonicClang - Doom 3 Classic - E1M5

Welcome to the 2014 Vinticuffs Halloween Celebration!

It's about that time of the year again where the air gets colder, leaves start dying, and the dead start walking. This year, Vinticuffs is looking to host multiple multiplayer events - and do some Let's Play & Streaming of horror video games.

If it involves the supernatural, cults, or any other type of haunts - you can be sure that we'll tackle it this month, as we play through an extensive catalogue featuring Doom, System Shock 2, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Pripyat.

To get started - head on over to the events page, or if you want to mark your calendar for a specific stream. If there's a specific title that you would like to play, feel free to contact us and we'll either promote your event, or host it during the month as well!

Event News

10/14: Vinticuffs! + Extra Life 2014

Hey everyone!

Apparently I'd have been living under a rock and completely forgot about the annual Extra Life campaign. Well, it just so happens that this year's campaign falls on October 25th, which is when we already had two events being hosted ( Painkiller: Black @ 6PM CDT - then YouTuber; Falconer02 had requested a community event for Half-Life 1 Mod, Sven Coop).

We will additionally be revisiting previous events throughout the day, as we come together for a good cause. If you're interested in participating, you might want to have a handful of the following titles installed prior to October 25th.

  • Painkiller: Black (Official Event @ 6PM CDT)
  • Half-Life 1 w/ Sven Coop modification (Official Event @ 8PM CDT)
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Pripyat
  • DooM and DooM II
  • HeXen II
  • The Secret World
  • QUAKE
  • RUNE Classic
  • Unreal Trilogy (not 3)

Given the nature of Extra Life, we will move around a bit - so be sure to pay attention for Mumble information, join the Steam group chat, or the IRC channel to keep in touch with our current status.

If you would like to sponsor and/or participate with Vinticuffs! as a community, you can join the V! Extra Life team.

10/13: Week 2 Update

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let you know that we will be rescheduling last weekends events (HeXen II & STALKER - Call of Pripyat) to some place into the future. While we did play, it just wasn't as smooth as we had desired due to time differences on Friday (HeXen) and server issues on Saturday (STALKER). We did have a nice turn out for the STALKER event, but some weren't able to participate due to having to fall back on a VPN solution - so our goal is to get some form of a proper dedicated server up and running - then we will revisit it again, this time with less janky networking. We hope to have access to some sort of server before our Aliens Vs Predator 2 event (October 19th), as that title also prefers a Windows server.

Other than that, streaming went on a slow down due to issues with Twitch (copyright infringement when streaming The 7th Guest), software issues (can't get some of them to event stream), and then there's been some pretty heavy storms in our area that has been affecting the network. We hope to continue this week with a few streaming sprints to get some more out of the way.

So as always, thanks for your participation - and see you throughout this week!

10/05: Week 1 + New Event

Hey everyone.

We've just wrapped up the first weekend of events (DooM & DooM 3), and we had a pretty good turn out! Thanks to all who joined. In addition to the events - we've got a full playthrough of SHIVERS up, and a partial run of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.

Stay tuned this week for another stream, the completion of IHNMAIMS, and maaaaybe a couple of give aways.

YouTube personality, Falconer02, has requested an addition to our event roster. On October 25th we will be playing SVEN COOP "THEY HUNGER" after our Painkiller event (~8PM CST). We may branch out of They Hunger and play some other horror themed campaigns, we'll keep you updated.

Anyways, posting up the videos from our streams - and we'll see you again this weekend!

09/17: Servers Up For Testing

I've recently set up the DooM(2), DooM III, and FEAR servers for the Halloween event. Please feel free to connect, test performance, and if you'd like to make a gamemode/map/mod suggestion - feel free to hit me at Sebhael AT vinticuffs DOT com.

Connect using the following IP (or Hostname where accepted):

servers.vinticuffs.com ( 104.131.17.65 )

HeXen 2 is throwing a fit, and I realize I never set up the Painkiller server. I will post an update when I get those two running. Unfortunately, at this rate, we will probably need to play off someone's locally hosted server for AvP2 and STALKER since my server is Linux and these two games only have Windows binaries (WINE won't work either since there's no GUI to attach to, since they aren't terminal server apps).

Stay tuned for more information regarding early Streams, Events, and Giveaways to be hosted by Vinticuffs staff members (Sebhael, FilthySerf, UncleSpook, and Mara'kaate).

08/25: All Events Posted

All currently scheduled events have been posted on the events page, Vinticuffs Page, and Steam Group. Google+ will be coming soon. Please note that due to the huge amount of time between today and the events - times/dates may change sporadically depending on life events.

Thanks,
Sebhael.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vinticuffs?

Vinticuffs! is a web community based around legacy video games. Modern titles have taken the spotlight, and left older games out to dry - Vinticuffs looks to breathe new life into these forgotten games by providing tools for users to collaborate efforts to organize game meetings, advertise servers, discover new content, and discuss aspects of their favorite video games.

Why a Halloween event?

I've always been a huge fan of the horror genre. I don't really have the resources to actually run out and enjoy the holiday like I used to, but there's so many great horror based games that can be played to get yourself in the mood for the season!

With that, queue this string of events. It's a time to sit back and enjoy two of my favorite things - horror, and older video games - while inviting others to join along for the fun.

Will you do host/stream X?

The core of Vinticuffs is to provide an environment for users to collaborate to play any older game together - so with that said. If you are interested in a particular game, please inform me and I can either attempt to create and host the event myself, or post it on all of the V! social media sites and promote it to attempt to get you traffic.

As for streaming - at this current time I have 10 other games to do - perhaps I'll get them done in time - but if you're interested in recording a Let's Play and would like to share it with the V! channel, or would like to stream a supported game, I will also promote that as well.

Though, please consider the following.

Hey! That's not retro!

You're right, some of these titles are not technically legacy at all. There's some different mechanics and formulas working into what's supported at V!. Newer/Popular titles will generally remain unsupported, but some circumstances make them a special case.

Each game goes through the following process: ( AGE > LIFE > HOMAGE ) - BLACKLIST

AGE, as you can presume, is the over-all age of the game. By default, the bulk of games older than 10 years (of current year) will generally be accepted. There's a few special occasions, which will be brought up later.

LIFE, some games - good or bad - simply does not retain it's playerbase long. Which creates and over-all frustrating experience trying to find an online game. PREY and the STALKER franchises highlight this critera - as while they're not quite a decade old yet, barely anyone is playing their online components.

HOMAGE is there to help promote indie developers primarily. This is for things such as Custom Total-Conversion Modifications - and indie releases that attempt to either recreate/reenvision an older video game. Half-Life 2 mod: Fortress Forever is a gleaming example of this.

BLACKLIST. Unfortunately, there are some games out there that fall under one or more of the above critera - but STILL have a HUGE playerbase. These are titles/franchises that simply are not supported. This list is still being debated in full, but things like Counter-Strike will probably never be supported at V!. The reasoning for this is so that we can protect our over-all envision, but preventing the site from becoming extremely one-sided. There's plenty of extremely active CS communities, they are still popping up daily.

Anything I can do to help?

Aside from monetary help for server costs (donation link will be below) - there's a handful of ways you can help out with both this event, and the community in the long run.

Advertisement! It's always good to have word of mouth traffic, since general advertisment can be quite pricey! Simply share this event; or one of our social networking links (sidebar) to your pals. It'd be highly appreciated.

Game Server Hosting. If you already have a pre-existing server running a game on the events page, that you are either not using or will let us borrow for the night. Feel free to contact me. I will want to change the server name, and possbily install some new maps - so I'll also need FTP/RCON or if you want to do it all that works as well.

If you're in need of cheap/reliable web hosting - you could always check out DigitalOcean, $5 for a small VPS. If interested, why not use my referal? (You receive $10 free credit, which is about 2 months).

Volunteer help. I'm not exactly the best web designer, I tend to focus more on the development side these days. So the V! community could always use a non-profit GFX master, Social Media Coordinator, and dedicated recorders/streamers.

Money. Money is the root of all evil; which if you'd like to donate.

All funds received before October 31st 2014 will be used to fund the Halloween event game servers. Additional funds will be used for community assets - such as web hosting, domain renewals, advertisement, etc.

This website sucks!

It should (WILL) be worse! I was aiming for a recreation of cheesy 1990's websites. This was the best I could do this year, but I promise it will mutate into something gastly in future years.

John Romero's head...why? :(

Now who's whos bitch!?

Modern PC Support

Below are tips/tweaks that will make a game run in native widescreen, proper FoV, and smoother (where applicable).

At any time FoV is mentioned, the preceding number is personal. I use a Field of View around 100 for most games, and my monitor is 16:9. If you have a 4:3/16:10 monitor, the number is up to you. Obviously, if you're using the in-game console, you can play with this setting until you find your personal number.

« Back

DOOM

We will be using a modernized SourcePort (Zandronum is in the package) for DOOM. In the options menu, you will find settings to enable MouseLook - and most common widescreen/high-res resolutions are supported.

Field of View
Bring down the console (~) and type fov 100.

DOOM 3

Bring up the console ( CTRL + SHIFT + ~ ) and type in the following commands.

seta r_customWidth 1920 :: Your monitor's width
seta r_customHeight 1080 :: Your monitor's height
seta r_mode -1 :: Allows custom aspect ratio
seta r_aspectRatio :: Use 1 (one) for 16:9, 2 (two) for 16:10

Field of View
DOOM 3's native FoV with proper Aspect Ratio setting is considered gold, but if you wish to have higher pull down the console and type -

seta g_fov 100

6th Venom's Doom3 HQ Menu is a wonderful addition to your game.

HeXen II

Use Source Port Hammer of Thyrion. Options will enable constant mouse-look and widescreen/hq resolutions.

Field of View
Bring up the console ( ~ ) and type fov 100

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Pripyat

STALKER - COP is a modern release and supports mouse-look and high resolutions out of the box. The default FoV is low though, there is a FoV Switcher but I can not guarantee it's cooperation with multiplayer servers since it modifies core files to acheive the desired effect. I will test it shortly and edit with my results.

F.E.A.R.

FEAR is a modern release and supports mouse-look and high resolutions out of the box (as of v1.08 patch). The default FoV is unchangable from my understanding though.

Aliens Vs Predator 2

To enable high resolutions, enter the game folder and find autoexec.cfg. Do a FIND (CTRL+F) and search for lines containing "screen", replace any values regarding width and height.

Field of View
Field of View requires a mod, which I'm currently testing, since I'm sure everyone needs to use the same mod in order to play online together. That's the assumption, at least.

Painkiller

Painkiller should support native resolutions out of the box. To change FoV, bring down the console ( ~ ) and type fov 100.

System Shock 2

SS2 is a finicky game from experience, sometimes it likes to let you select native resolutions without help, sometimes it doesn't. For comformity sake, all users should probably look into Kolya's SS2Tool, which will take a lot of the frustration of getting SS2 running away.
